POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

This is work ensuring the security of the law enforcement officers and facilities through the use of a communication-situation center. Work includes providing non-sworn law enforcement support services and university main switchboard operation. Responsibilities focus on the successful operation of the bank of equipment necessary for an effective agency, including a police radio based station, campus-wide radio based station, Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center teletype terminal, Criminal Justice Network (internet based), telephone and radio recorder, system; fire, intrusion, hold-up security and blue-light alarm system, facsimile machine, PBX consoled, and operation of all types of computer systems in a police department communications center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma and one year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Proficiency in typing and State certification or ability to obtain certification within six months on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC) computer system are required. Must have 232 hours of 911 dispatcher training and pass state issued certification exam within one year of employment or have previous dispatcher experience prior to April 2012 to substitute experience for training hours and pass state issued certification exam within one year of employment.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

College course work or vocation/technical training in the area of communications, criminal justice or related field may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Must be proficient in typing (keyboard experience) and possess or be able to obtain a Certification on the NCIC/FCIC Law Enforcement Computer system within 6 months of hire AND the Florida 9-1-1 Telecommunicator Certification within one year of hire.

Must possess ability to relate to the public, alphabetize, file and communicate verbally and in writing.
Must possess ability to work in a confidential environment due to the sensitivity of information within the department.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience operating and utilizing the following equipment in order to provide critical information to law enforcement officers, emergency personnel or similar: police radios or similar equipment; pager systems; telephone/radio base stations; telephone/radio recording systems; alarm boards and/or computerized systems.
Experience coordinating information with surrounding law enforcement agencies and/or various other state and federal agencies.
Professional experience working with emergency situations.
Experience monitoring alarm systems and notifying personnel upon activation.
Experience with the Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center teletype terminal.
Completed FCIC Full Access Basic Certification.
Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills.
Experience working in a confidential environment.
Experience working with and assisting the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 50% - Operation of police radio, providing a life-line to state law enforcement officers, and campus-wide radio base stations, university pager systems, telephone/radio base stations, university pager systems, telephone/radio recording system, all alarm boards and computerized systems, and coordinating information with surrounding law enforcement agencies, various other state and federal agencies and UWF departments. Implementation and performance of all special and emergency situations. Monitors all alarm systems and notifies personnel upon activation. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Operates the National Crime Information Center/Florida Crime Information Center and Criminal Justice Network terminal and all its functions, which includes but is not limited to, verification of driver’s license, personal background, criminal histories, vehicle tag and registration; and entry, modifications, locates, clears and cancellations of persons and property. - (Essential)
  • 6% - Acts as a receptionist for the Police Department. Answers questions, gives information and makes referrals. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Law enforcement authorities conducting criminal and/or confidential investigations by coordinating and disseminating information relevant to law enforcement operations. Receives and evaluates calls from the public requesting police assistance of emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Monitors police scanner and mutual aid frequency for receiving and evaluating calls from local law enforcement and emergency-response agencies. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Maintains and files field complaint cards, and maintains, issues and controls all University temporary, sidewalk, and guest parking permits. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Maintains and files university keys, engraver, issue and control of same. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Monitoring and operation of the university of West Florida’s main switchboard handling directory inquiries, along with local, long-distance, overseas and conference calls; assists users of SUNCOM; directs callers to appropriate departments; furnishes information to callers concerning services of the university. Provides 24-hour telephone service and assistance between the general public and university personnel. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Reads and interprets for Americans with Disabilities (ADA) map, Fire and Security maps, Fire Hydrant map, University map, Police Zone map. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Receive and process found property, trespasses, disabled vehicles, duty rosters, emergency phone checks, parking appeals, repossession of vehicles, time cards, watch orders, keys, maintain log, reports and tagging on same. - (Essential)
  • 4% - Operates, disseminates and maintains written log of all outgoing and incoming facsimile messages for several UWF departments. - (Essential)
