POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

The Network Engineer II is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and security of enterprise routed networks across the campus. This position supports on-campus, on-premises network infrastructure, including routers, switches, WAN/LAN networks, VLANs, VPNs, and related network services. Duties include configuring, installing, and maintaining routing hardware and network services; managing IP addressing and routing architectures; supporting and securing data center and campus network infrastructure. The Network Engineer II owns assigned routing systems end-to-end, proactively identifying and resolving routing, performance, and network security issues, ensuring reliable and secure operations. This position works independently and is expected to take full ownership of projects and tasks, driving them to completion from planning through resolution.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience, is required. Candidates must have at least two years of experience in network engineering or network support roles, including experience supporting one or more major network systems. This position requires hands-on experience designing, configuring, installing, and maintaining enterprise network infrastructure such as wired LAN/WAN, wireless networks, VPNs, VLANs, and related security appliances. Applicants should also have experience supporting and securing network systems through tools such as firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS)

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have practical knowledge of routing protocols, enterprise network design, and network operations, with demonstrated experience configuring and supporting routers, switches, and WAN connectivity in enterprise environments. Strong skills in network routing, path optimization, and troubleshooting are essential, along with a solid understanding of network security principles, including the ability to monitor network activity and respond to incidents as needed. This position requires the ability to work independently with general supervision, manage assigned routing-related tasks or processes, and resolve difficult but not complex technical problems. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are required, including the ability to clearly explain routing concepts to colleagues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred candidates have a track record of taking full ownership of major network systems or projects from start to finish, including designing, implementing, maintaining, and securing enterprise routed networks. They proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve network and security issues, ensuring systems remain reliable, performant, and secure. Experience supporting multi-site WAN/LAN environments and optimizing routing paths is highly desirable. Candidates who consistently follow through on challenges, take initiative, and drive results independently are strongly preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 50% - Collaborates with other Network Engineers on the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of the enterprise campus network, including overseeing and advancing the architecture of wired LAN/WAN, VPN, and wireless networks for the main campus and remote sites. Plans and executes upgrades and installations of network equipment in the data center and building communications closets. Configures, installs, and optimizes networking equipment such as switches, VoIP phones, wireless access points, UPS, VLANs, and related security measures. Provides advanced troubleshooting and ensures the reliability and performance of critical network systems. Serves as a technical resource and mentor for junior network staff to support knowledge transfer and consistent implementation of standards. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Responsible for the security and integrity of the University’s network infrastructure, including the administration and management of firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, and other security controls. Monitors and analyzes network logs to detect and investigate anomalous behavior, coordinates with Information Security leadership on incident response, and implements security best practices and solutions to mitigate risks. Develops and maintains network security configurations, such as ACLs, to ensure compliance with security policies. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Oversees and participates in ITS standard processes and procedures, including change management, monitoring, and alerting related to network operations. Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of network devices, configurations, fiber plant, and related infrastructure. Ensures proper inventory management of all network hardware and connectivity assets. Develops, updates, and enforces procedures and standards to support the stability and security of the campus enterprise network. Provides training, documentation, and guidance to other network staff to promote consistent practices and operational continuity. - (Essential)
