POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director provides strategic leadership and administrative oversight for all University Commons and Event Services operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, efficient facility utilization, financial sustainability, and alignment with institutional priorities. This role oversees the regular operations of the University Commons and Events Services (UCES), including facility use coordination, student services, and maintaining safe, clean, and functional environments. Provides budgetary oversight and develops strategies to increase revenue generation and donor stewardship. Resolves escalated operational issues requiring coordination with campus departments and/or external customers. Responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of departmental procedures, policies, activities, and events; oversight of facility management including routine and deferred maintenance and capital improvement projects; and development of a sustainable long-term plan for scheduled maintenance and technological upgrades within the facility. Develops performance metrics and assessment strategies to evaluate facility utilization, customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, revenue performance, and service effectiveness, using results to guide strategic decision-making. Oversees the development and implementation of response protocols and coordinates critical incident management during campus emergencies, including severe weather events and campus closures. Supervises professional staff in the areas of facility management, operations involving reservations and event services, and the Service Desk.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience; or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years of appropriate experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of student union administration and/or facilities operations. Experience with budgeting and fiscal management. Ability to supervise and develop staff. Excellent customer service, communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills. Experience with event management and scheduling software and/or other appropriate technologies. Ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate effectively with campus partners, and support a student-centered environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Background in event and facilities management within a university or higher education setting. Demonstrated success supervising full-time professional and student staff, managing budgets and revenue-generating operations, and planning campus events, conferences, or student programming. Knowledge of capital improvement, renovation, and facility enhancement projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 45% - Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the daily operations of University Commons and Event Services (UCES). Develop and implement a strategic vision for the University Commons as the campus hub for student engagement and community, establishing long-range priorities aligned with divisional and institutional goals. Direct and supervise professional staff responsible for facility management, reservations and event services, and the Service Desk, including recruiting, mentoring, developing, and evaluating professional and student staff while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and customer service. Oversee departmental budgets, purchasing, revenue generation, financial reporting, pricing structures, and donor stewardship efforts. Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and operational strategies. Identify new revenue opportunities and cultivate external partnerships that support departmental and institutional goals. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Lead the long-term planning and operational management of the University Commons and Conference Center facilities, including facility operations, routine and deferred maintenance, capital renewal, and long-term asset management. Develop multi-year facility renewal plans, identify future capital priorities, recommend renovation projects, and guide long-range space utilization planning to ensure facilities and technological upgrades evolve to meet changing student needs. Coordinate emergency response efforts during campus emergencies, severe weather events, and campus closures through business continuity planning and operational leadership. Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, ADA accessibility requirements, university policies, and vendor compliance standards. Review contractual risk, oversee incident reporting processes, and collaborate with campus partners to maintain safe, functional, accessible, and welcoming facilities. Assess facility utilization, customer satisfaction, and other key performance metrics to identify trends, optimize operations, recommend new services and amenities, enhance the student experience, and drive continuous improvement. Seek and incorporate student feedback into facility planning, service enhancements, and operational decision-making. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Provide leadership for the administration of the events and reservations system, working collaboratively with campus partners to ensure effective system utilization and efficient reservation and event processes. Collaborate with campus departments, tenants, and other stakeholders occupying or utilizing University Commons space to optimize facility operations. Meet with high-priority campus and external clients to support complex event planning, develop external partnerships, and resolve challenging operational issues. Provide leadership and guidance for urgent and high-profile event and space reservation requests while supporting signature institutional events, campus traditions, and other major university functions through exceptional customer service and operational coordination. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Support additional University Commons and Event Services programs, strategic initiatives, and operational needs. Participate in departmental committees, divisional initiatives, strategic planning efforts, and cross-functional projects as needed. - (Essential)
