POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Director, Content & Audience is WUWF's program director and chief editor. Starting from the audience (who the station serves, who it is not yet reaching, and what they need), the position leads what WUWF puts on the air and online: the program schedule, news and music, national and local, and the journalism and original content the station creates. The position sets programming and coverage priorities with the team, edits the work, coaches and develops hosts, reporters and producers, builds new programming, and is accountable for audience reach and growth. The position serves on the leadership team, informing station-wide strategy with the other unit leads, and manages the content and programming budget. It is accountable for the station’s editorial integrity and independence, and works with Revenue & Development on sponsorship and member benefits within that standard.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and six years of appropriate experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of direct people management, including hiring, coaching and performance conversations. A collaborative leadership style, with a record of building shared plans with staff and peers while holding clear accountability for results. Demonstrated use of audience data, including ratings, streaming and digital analytics, to make programming and editorial decisions, and experience growing audience beyond broadcast. Demonstrated editing across forms, from structural through line level. Working knowledge of journalism ethics, noncommercial media standards, and the FCC requirements that bear on content and programming. Sound judgment under deadline and under public pressure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In order of priority: public media leadership experience, and familiarity with NPR standards and the member-station system; experience as a program director, including schedule strategy, audience research, national program acquisition and music programming. Also valued: podcast or original-series development from concept through launch; supervising student or early-career journalists to publication standard and working with university faculty; experience with multi-newsroom collaborations or AI tools in a newsroom setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 25% - Programming and the broadcast schedule. Serve as program director, accountable for the schedule on 88.1 FM, the HD channels and the streams, including news, music, national and local programming. Use Nielsen, streaming and digital data and listener feedback to adjust the schedule. Lead local music programming with its hosts. Lead national program acquisition and renewals and relationships with NPR and other providers. Communicate schedule decisions to Operations & Technology and Revenue & Development. Coordinate on-air drives with Revenue & Development, scheduling on-air talent and programming around them. Direct on-air sound with on-air staff, and coordinate with Revenue & Development so promos and fundraising and sponsorship spots are recorded by on-air talent and scheduled. Monitor the quality of on-air content, and prepare the quarterly issues and programs list. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Audience growth and platform strategy. Grow WUWF's audience, with accountability for reach and audience succession. Define the audiences WUWF intends to reach before choosing the programs and products meant to reach them. Lead the cycle that produces WUWF's public service priorities through structured community listening. Set and review audience indicators across broadcast and digital and share them with the team to guide programming and editorial decisions. Integrate broadcast, web, newsletter, podcast and social into one content plan with audience staff. Set priorities for promoting WUWF programs and content across broadcast and digital. Lead the response to listener comments, requests and complaints. - (Essential)
  • 35% - Editorial direction, original content and standards. With the newsroom, translate WUWF's public service priorities into recurring coverage themes across platforms. Serve as the editorial leader for the whole organization: set daily and weekly coverage priorities, make assignments, and answer for what WUWF covers and declines to cover. Review the beat structure against community information needs. Edit features, enterprise and explanatory work from structure through line. Lead development of original podcasts, limited-run series and public-affairs formats through a process open to ideas from across the staff. Steward the WUWF Code of Editorial Integrity, set standards for new tools including AI, and support the FCC obligations that originate in the programming and coverage record. Develop editorial collaborations with NPR, statewide public media and regional newsrooms, and pitch WUWF work into national distribution. - (Essential)
  • 20% - People, applied learning and department management. Coach and supervise reporters, hosts, producers and freelance contributors. Keep a regular aircheck cadence with on-air staff and set documented development goals with each team member. Build a two-way feedback culture, lead the team through change, and recruit, hire, develop and retain staff. Lead applied learning as a standing function, with student pathways that recur across semesters, and be accountable for the quality and educational value of student work WUWF publishes and airs. Manage the content and programming budget, and serve as a leadership partner to the Executive Director and the other unit leads. - (Essential)
